[Jesus said,] “And I, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you, and you, you sit in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” – Luke 24:49
In this coming Sunday’s Gospel reading, we hear Luke’s account of when Jesus makes the disciples testifiers that Jesus Christ is the Lord of Creation and the Conqueror of Death. The above verse is when Jesus tells them that before they begin their testimonies, they will be clothed with power from on high. This is to say, the Power of God, the very power that brought Jesus into their midst in that upper room, was going to be placed on them. They are going to get clothed in Power, power that is greater and more wonderful than anything else that they might have expected.
This power, of course, comes from the Promise of the Father, the Powersuit from on High who we name the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Holy Trinity: the power of God that cannot be defeated.
When we read this today, we want this power as well. We want to have the power to explain to friends, strangers, family, and enemies that Jesus Christ is the Lord of All Creation. We want the power to be able to bravely serve God through serving our neighbors. We want the power to be able to work miracles. We want the power to be Jesus in the world right now. We want this power because we feel that we don’t have it.
But if we think we do not have this power, we are wrong.
The Church does, in fact, have this power. We were given this power in our Baptism. When we eat the Body and Blood of our Lord in the Eucharist at the Table this power is reenergized. When we hear or read Scripture and we hear sermons or lessons, our zeal grows and we get pumped up with the love that gets God’s Power flowing. Yes indeed, God’s Power, the Power of the Holy Spirit, is very real and it is present in us already.
It is power of true love that is stronger than Sin, Death, and the Devil and it is given for you.
May God continue to be with you,
Yours in Christ, Pastor Paul+
