I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. – Philippians 1:6
The last time I remember being clean shaven was while I was on internship over five years ago. As I have skimmed through pictures of me on Facebook, I think that was the last time I had no facial hair. My default setting is to have some sort of facial hair on my face. Sometimes it has been shorter, sometimes it has been longer, but my upper lip and chin tend to be covered rather than exposed. I have friends who refuse to believe that I was born without a beard.
When I was first speaking with the call committee back in 2015, I heard that you, the people of St Paul, were going to undertake the process of reroofing our building. Our old roof had most certainly reached the end of its life and it needed replaced. There might have been hesitation because of the cost. There might have been anxiety because I was recently called and we were unsure of whether or not we could do it.
We set the goal of paying the roof off in five years, but here we are, just over three years after our capital campaign got underway.
It was a good work that everyone did to get a new roof as well as to raise the money to pay off the roof. We have reached the completion of this good work and this is a momentous occasion! We have completed this good work before the day of our Lord Jesus Christ! Truly, we have awaited the advent of this day, a day when our roof debt would be paid off. Christ has worked in, through, and among us.
In honor of this momentous occasion, I will be clean shaven for four continuous Sundays. To be sure, being clean shaven for this long is also a momentous occasion in my life. Even though I was clean shaven five years ago, I do not believe that I was clean shaven for more than a couple of weeks.
Come and see my chin and upper lip for the first time this Sunday!
Yours in Christ,
