Lord, keep us steadfast in Your Word;
Curb those who by deceit or sword
Would wrest the kingdom from Your Son
And bring to naught all He has done.

Lord Jesus Christ, Your pow’r make known,
For You are Lord of lords alone;
Defend Your holy Church that we
May sing your praise eternally.

O Comforter of priceless worth,
Send peace and unity on earth;
Support us in our final strife
And lead us out of death to life.

Of all of Martin Luther’s hymns that get sung this time of year to mark the anniversary of the start of the Reformation, I find “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word” to be one of the more meaningful ones for me. While I do love “A Mighty Fortress,” “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast” is a prayer from the Church to the three persons of God. While it can be sung in loud defiance, it is a hymn that can be sung quietly with deep fervor.

It is quite a nice complement to “A Mighty Fortress.” “A Mighty Fortress” reminds us of the demonic forces that seek to bring death and destruction and our sure confidence that God has the final word. “Lord, Keep us steadfast” asks God for the daily needs of the Church as we continue to walk on this journey when we are being attacked by evil.

May God keep you steadfast in the Word,
Yours in Christ, Pastor Paul+
